Photographers
In the United States, photography is a right protected by the First Amendment. Unfortunately, not everyone is aware of this right and how broadly it spans. Have you ever been approached by a citizen or person of authority when taking photos? What if a police officer told you that photography was not allowed? Would you know your rights in this situation?
The answer to many questions you may have about photography can be found in the
Legal Rights Of Photographers PDF. Some questions you would need to ask yourself are "Am I on public or private property?" "Of what am I taking photos?" "Could I be violating anyone's expectation of privacy? Are there any military installations nearby?"
Before you go out shooting, it is a good idea to know your rights as a photographer. I keep printed copies of the
Legal Rights Of Photographers in my camera bag and hand them out to all my photographer friends. However, please note, laws and regulations may have changed since this piece was published, and it is always a best to research local laws and ordinances before shooting.
